Horse Riding Safety Tips

In any equestrian facility or in places where horses live, a series of basic rules must always be taken into account to maintain the safety of both ourselves and the horses.

  • If you go on horseback, it is essential to protect your head with a helmet . It is also advisable to wear boots or gaiters to protect the legs and thus avoid wearing flat shoes since we could get stuck .

  • You should not approach a horse without warning it as it could scare it. You must be careful when passing behind as you could surprise him.
  • When you enter or leave the stable or the paddock : you must open the gate wide and go before the horse . We must teach him not to rush because if the horse enters quickly it could hurt us. We must also bear in mind that when we release it to the meadow, we must be careful, because the horse feels free and can get too excited.
  • Whether riding or standing on the ground, we must keep our distance from the other horses , especially if we work in a tanda, we will have to leave distance with the one in front as if there were another horse in the middle.
  • We should not shout or make loud noises near the animals, as they need tranquility.
  • Before feeding a horse we should ask its owner if we can give it to him.
  • If we feed it with our hands, be it carrots, apples or just straw, we must give it to it with our flat hand , that is, in a horizontal position without grasping the food, because otherwise it could bite us unintentionally.
  • If we go out into the field, we must bear in mind that horses receive many different stimuli and could surprise us with their reactions, so we must be very attentive.
  • It is also important that we notify those who follow us of any incident , for example, if a car is coming and we must be careful.
Now you know what to keep in mind when you pay a visit to the horses.
